The 20th century reanalysis is based on the CERA-20C data set as available from the ECMWF. Technical details are available in this publication. The CERA-20C data consist of 24 hourly cycles of forecasts that are started each day at 18Z and the maps available here contain forecasted fields from 6-24 hrs.
